Definition
The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is one of the three market-based flexibility mechanisms established by the Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (1997). It is an effective mechanism to reduce emissions by promoting sustainable energy projects, which allows emissions trading among different countries and helps in achieving goals of emissions reduction (Nautiyal and Varun 2015: 121). CDM projects earn tradable, saleable certified emission reductions (CERs) credits that can be used by industrialized (Annex 1) countries and firms to meet a part of their emission reduction targets under the Kyoto Protocol.
