Definition of the Subject and Its Importance
Quantum field theory and condensed matter have strong similarities, despite the fact that the physical phenomena which describe are rather different. In the first case, one has to deal with high-energy physics problems, where the properties of particles are described by the combination of special relativity and quantum physics. In the second case, one has to deal with the low-energy properties of a system of an enormous number of quantum particles, whose collective behaviour determines the properties of matter; in particular, the exotic low temperature phenomena driven by quantum physics.
