Abstract

Due to numerous natural disasters and terrorist attacks, plans for the medical management of such disasters have recently undergone significant development. Despite numerous possible scenarios that have been incorporated into the plans, the special needs of pediatric patients have not been sufficiently taken into account. These particularities range from numerous anatomical differences in comparison to adult patients to physiological differences and psychological specialties that have to be taken into account. Central points of an adequate integration of pediatric patients into the emergency plans to cope with mass casualty incidents must include not only an appropriately adapted stock of materials but also regular training units for the treatment teams and sufficient triage.
