Abstract

This entry offers a summary of Michael Theunissen’s contribution to contemporary German philosophy and philosophical theories of recognition. Theunissen’s Kierkegaardian existentialist background is explored as well as his influential work on social ontology, the problem of the Other, and his critical interpretation of Hegelian recognition. An account of the role of dialogue in theorising intersubjectivity is offered, and criticisms of Theunissen’s work are discussed, including Williams’ critique of his account of Hegelian recognition and Habermas’s critique of Theunissen’s theological conception of the Absolute.
