Abstract
Jacques Derrida’s work proposes a counter-intuitive approach on recognition based on asymmetry. Since his 1967 book, Writing and Difference, the question of the (right) relationship to the other shows up recurringly in his writings. Against a model based on reciprocity, Derrida suspects the “play of the Same” to make violence to the other. The main issue is: How should the other be addressed? Derrida tackles the encounter as a visitation, an emergence of the other that gives rise to the experience of a separation. With this perspective on recognition, the theory of deconstruction questions the very bases of ethics.
