Zusammenfassung
In Deutschland sind etwa 2–2,5 Mio. Menschen alkoholkrank, d. h., sie zeigen ein abnormes Trinkverhalten und eine psychische Abhängigkeit mit Kontrollverlust und Verengung des Denkens sowie eine Toleranzsteigerung. Bei Alkoholkarenz führen dann die körperlichen Entzugssymptome oft zur klinischen Diagnose. Die soziale Position ist im Frühstadium häufig noch nicht gefährdet, das Vollbild ist allerdings nicht mit einer normalen Lebensführung zu vereinbaren. Zur Suchtproblematik und Therapie verweisen wir auf die psychiatrische Literatur. Jährlich sterben etwa 50.000 Menschen an den Folgen des Alkoholismus. Die Ursachen sind neben den internistischen Komplikationen (z. B. Leberschädigung, Ulkus, Zieve-Syndrom, Pankreatitis, Kardiomyopathie) die neurologischen Folgeerkrankungen, die etwa bei jedem fünften Patienten auftreten. Am häufigsten ist das Alkoholentzugsdelir; etwa 15 % der Erkrankten machen während ihrer Suchtkarriere einmal oder mehrfach diesen potenziell lebensbedrohlichen Zustand durch.
