Definition
On the one hand, the appearance of cracks and crack-like flaws should not be excluded, even if the structure is carefully manufactured and assembled. This is because sometimes yet very small cracks may be the origin for structural failure, particularly when the structure is dynamically loaded. On the other hand, the appearance of cracks is not per se a reason for repair measures or replacement of the respected structural component. Thus, it is important to have methods for evaluating the risk of failure, when a crack in a lightweight structure is detected.
