Synonyms
Definition
The terms “sustainability” and “sustainable” are used to describe a situation, process, or tangible entity that is viable and enduring in the long term. It has been associated with “sustainable development,” with the two terms often used interchangeably. The de facto standard definition from the “Brundtland” report of this is:
Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. (UNWCED 1987, p. 8)
Developing from this, sustainability operates at the nexus of economic, environmental, and social benefit, although in the early days, the focus was upon environmental sustainability – at a species, ecosystem, and natural resource basis.
