Country Background
Eswatini, formerly Swaziland, is a small landlocked kingdom in Southern Africa. It is 17,300 square kilometers surrounded on three sides by South Africa and on the fourth side by Mozambique. In 2017, its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was 4.409 billion USD and it falls into the World Bank’s low middle-income category (World Bank Open Data 2018). However, 39.7% of the population, particularly in rural areas, live below the poverty line. The population is 1.4 million (2018) of which 22% fall in the 15–24-year-old age range. The median age is 20.6 years (Worldometers 2019).
The economy of Eswatini is mainly dependent on primary industries (e.g., agriculture and forestry contribute 13% to GDP), and it has few mineral resources. Further, a significant proportion (circa 50%) of its GDP is attributable to Government services.
