Applications of Ionic Liquids in Desulfurization of Fuel Oil

Introduction

The sulfur-containing fuel oil would cause the catalyst deactivation and equipment corrosion in the refining process. Additionally, the emitted sulfur oxides could inevitably result in the air pollution and acid rain due to the harmful reaction in the atmosphere [1,2,3]. Thus, considerable efforts are made to reduce the sulfur content in fuel oil for avoiding the harmful environment effects.

Nowadays, many desulfurization technologies are employed to remove the sulfur components in fuel oils. Generally, hydrodesulfurization (HDS), a conventional method in petroleum refineries, was referred to the process that sulfur components were reacted with hydrogen to form hydrocarbon and H2S [4, 5]. This desulfurization process conducted at high temperature and pressure could result in the increased operation costs, decreased catalyst lifespan, and large hydrogen consumption [6, 7].
