Definition

Block assembly is a technological process of subassemblies and parts into ship block, also known as block manufacturing. According to the characteristics of block production, it can be divided into flat section, curved section, and superstructure section. According to statistics, in modern shipbuilding, hull assembly and welding account for 12–18% of the total labor in shipyard construction. Therefore, improving the mechanization and automation level of assembly and welding work can not only reduce the labor intensity of workers but also effectively shorten the shipbuilding cycle and improve the product quality. Due to the adoption of new technologies such as digital amplification and numerical control, the accuracy of parts processing is continuously improved and the mechanization of assembly work is implemented (Liu and Wang 2011).
