Introduction
Strictly speaking, Catholic education – particularly, that provided by Catholic schools and universities – is that which is recognized by and is under the jurisdiction of the local Catholic religious authority, usually the local bishop. Under the 1983 Code of Canon Law of the Roman (Latin) rite of the Catholic Church, Catholic education is part of the teaching authority of the Church (§794). Key documents describing the nature, role, and objectives of Catholic education, including the formation and training of teachers, are found in decrees issued by the Pope and by offices of the Holy See (Vatican City); in the Code of Canon Law; and in documents by local ecclesiastical authorities, such as bishops and national conferences of bishops.
