Student Voice as Power-Laden Activity

Introduction

Student voice is an educational activity concerned with the perspectives of students as a social group, not for interest’s sake but in order to disrupt the dynamic of schooling where students are overlooked and excluded within educational debate, design, and decision-making. A central aim of student voice is to position students with influence and status to shape classroom practice, school initiatives, and education policy. For teachers (including preservice teachers), inviting student voice can potentially transform their teaching practice. Students view their learning and schooling from a unique vantage point; inviting this vantage point (or multiple and diverse vantage points) into the official conversation of schooling and into the learning process (through goal setting, curriculum design, assessment, and feedback to teachers on their teaching for instance) can transform the status quo politics of education.
