Training History Teachers in Brazil: New Guidelines for Teacher Training under the Common National Curricular Base

Introduction

Brazilian teachers are facing increasingly precarious situations: they are held responsible for failure; they are underpaid compared to other professionals with the same training in Brazil and compared to teachers in other countries; they are accused of brainwashing students; and they are victims of school violence. At the same time, it is evident that their responsibility towards the future of the country has grown. In the specific field of history and humanities have increased in Brazil the disbelief of democracy and, consequently, the appeal for political alternatives that imply the closure of republican institutions, such as Congress and the Federal Court of Justice, through a military coup. In addition, some ultraconservative movements have grown and gained strength in questioning some affirmative policies for the inclusion of blacks, indigenous people, and other minorities in spaces and positions until recently exclusive to the white population, usually men.
