Introduction
Digital technologies have impacted greatly on what it means to be literate in today’s world. The continual development and integration of digital technologies into the everyday lives of people has changed the way in which people communicate, access information, create content, problem solve, participate, and contribute in society. These changes are embedded in people’s work, leisure, and educational contexts and have called for a new way of thinking about literacy (Gilster 1997). For example, the traditional definition of literacy as being able to read and write using hard copy sources has now changed to include being able to read, write, and engage with a variety of media both offline and online. Significant factors that have accompanied changing literacy practices are the speed, volume, and diversity of information that people engage with and the many ways that people can create content and share information.
