Abstract

In this chapter, a brief introduction to the handbook is provided. There are six sections in the handbook that include: (1) social-cultural conceptions and perceptions, (2) social and emotional needs and learning processes, (3) identifying and nurturing diversely gifted and talented students, (4) assessment, pedagogy, and curricula, (5) diverse dimensions of gifted education, and (6) educational contexts, transitions, and community engagement. An overview of selected concepts and issues raised in the sections of the handbook will be highlighted and discussed. This chapter is meant to be informative and is not an in-depth review, in fact, I have chosen key points that emanate from the most recent Asia-Pacific research literature, recent reviews in international handbooks and books, and from the chapters submitted to this handbook. Hence, the discussion is not meant to be exhaustive, though it is hoped that it will encourage further discourse and provide the background to your reading of the following sections. For more details of the content of each of the chapters in each section, please refer to the introductions provided by the section editors at the beginning of each section.
