Abstract

Demetrius Chalkokondyles (1423–1511) was a humanist, a scholar, and an editor. He was a Byzantine émigré who had a long teaching career in Western Europe, being engaged in the teaching of Greek letters at prestigious Italian universities (Padua, Florence, Milan). Chalkokondyles was also a pioneer in the editorial activity of Greek texts in fifteenth century Italy. He contributed greatly to the intensification of Greek learning and the advancement of the study of philosophy in Renaissance Italy.
