Abstract

Noël Beda (c.1470–1537), syndic of the Faculty of Theology of Paris, was the leading polemicist in France defending the university’s scholastic curriculum against humanism and fighting to curtail the nascent Protestant Reformation. His opposition to several policies of King Francis I, however, resulted in his eventual arrest. He died in prison in 1537.
