Workplace Violence: Intimate Partner Violence

Definition

As defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States, intimate partner violence comprises threatened or actual violence or aggression (including sexual violence) directed at a current or former spouse or partner (c.f., Swanberg et al. 2006). Although this definition includes non-violent acts of aggression, more recently researchers have also used the term intimate partner aggression (LeBlanc et al. 2014) to refer to non-violent abuse within a current or former relationship.

Introduction

Intimate partner violence (IPV) can include same sex as well as heterosexual relationships. More commonly, intimate partner violence may also be referred to as domestic violence or as family violence. Although intimate partner violence originates outside of the workplace, it may spillover into the workplace or have consequences for employees’ workplace behavior.
