Zusammenfassung

In diesem Beitrag charakterisieren wir Autoethnografie als Methode der psychologischen Forschung. Wir gehen auf die Geschichte, den Arbeitsprozess und die Ergebnisse autoethnografischer Untersuchungen ein, unterscheiden verschiedene Gattungen innerhalb des Genres, erläutern das Konzept performativer Epistemologie, die Bedeutung von Schreiben als Erkenntnisprozess (method of inquiry) und die forschungsethischen Fragen, die damit verbunden sind. Wir diskutieren, wie sich Autoethnografie zu traditionellen Gütekriterien verhält und welcher Kritik der Ansatz vonseiten unterschiedlicher Fachcommunities ausgesetzt ist. Am Ende geben wir einen Überblick über die Verbreitung autoethnografischer Arbeit in den USA und im deutschsprachigen Raum.

Dies ist eine erweiterte und aktualisierte Fassung des Beitrages von Ellis, Adams und Bochner aus der Erstauflage von 2010, der von Paul Sebastian Ruppel und Katja Mruck aus dem Englischen übersetzt wurde. Die Ergänzungen (insb. die Abschn. 3.2, 4 und 6) gehen teilweise zurück auf andernorts publizierte Artikel (Ploder und Stadlbauer 2013, 2016, 2017; Stadlbauer und Ploder 2016), Abschn. 5 beruht zum Teil auf Ausführungen von Carolyn Ellis und Tony E. Adams (2014).
