Zusammenfassung
In diesem Kapitel wird das individuelle Sporttreiben aus einer ökonomischen Perspektive betrachtet. Einleitend wird erklärt, wie verschiedene Staaten und (staatliche) Institutionen die Sportaktivität der Bevölkerung fördern und warum der Staat in den Sportmarkt eingreift. Anschließend werden empirische Befunde zu den Determinanten und Effekten des individuellen Sporttreibens diskutiert. Darauf aufbauend werden Forschungslücken skizziert.
Dieser Beitrag ist Teil der Sektion Sportökonomie, herausgegeben von den Teilherausgebern Eike Emrich und Christian Pierdzioch, innerhalb des Handbuchs Sport und Sportwissenschaft, herausgegeben von Arne Güllich und Michael Krüger.

Bei einem Vergleich zwischen Deutschland und der Schweiz muss beachtet werden, dass die Schweiz im Jahr 2010 mit rund 7,87 Mio. Einwohner (Bundesamt für Statistik, Schweiz) nur knapp ein Zehntel der Einwohner Deutschlands (81,75 Mio. Einwohner Statistisches Bundesamt Deutschland) hatte.

Als Ergänzung zu dieser Übersicht können die Arbeiten von Hallmann und Breuer (2016), die sich auf ökonomisch-fundierte Studien aus den Jahren 2004–2014 beschränken, und Cabane und Lechner (2015) herangezogen werden. Letztere liefern einen Überblick über Faktoren, die mit Sport und körperlicher Aktivität verbunden sind, als auch eine Übersicht über relevante theoretische Ansätze. Ihr Fokus liegt auf Personen im erwerbsfähigen Alter.

Subjektive Angaben zur Sportaktivität werden oft kritisiert, da die Befragten dazu neigen, ihre Sportaktivität zu hoch einzuschätzen (Motl et al. 2005). Dieses Phänomen wird dem Problem der sozialen Erwünschtheit zugeordnet, dabei wird eine hohe Sportlichkeit generell positiv wahrgenommen, d.h. sie ist sozial erwünscht.

Diese kausale Beziehung erforscht derzeit ein Forschungsverbund der Universität Tübingen und der Universität St. Gallen unter der Leitung von Prof. Tim Pawlowski und Prof. Michael Lechner (gefördert von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft [DFG] und dem Schweizerischen Nationalfond [SNF]). Neben der Auswirkung der öffentlichen Sportfördermittel auf das Sporttreiben der Bevölkerung, soll dabei in einem zweiten Schritt der Effekt auf den individuellen Arbeitsmarkterfolg aufgeschlüsselt werden.
