Ilia Vekua (∗April 23, Jul. (∗May 6, greg.), 1907, Shesheleti, Kutaisi Governorate, Russian Empire; †December 2, 1977 in Tbilisi, Soviet Union) was a Georgian mathematician introducing fundamental concepts in complex analysis and singular integral and partial differential equations with applications to mechanics.

Education

After finishing school in Zugdidi, he entered as a student of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics at Tbilisi State University (1925–1930). From 1930 till 1933, he was a postgraduate student of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Leningrad under the supervision of A.N. Krylov, N.I. Muskhelishvili, and V.I. Smirnov. In 1937 he was awarded by the degree of Candidate of Sciences (Physics & Mathematics) and in 1940 by Doctor of Sciences (Physics & Mathematics).

Professional Career

In 1929 Vekua started his career as an observer of the Georgian Geophysics observatory; from 1933 till 1937, he was a Junior researcher of Tbilisi State University (Faculty of Physics...
